Non-Traditional Holiday Decoration

IMG_0434.JPG

We barely finished the turkey and people are lighting up their Christmas trees! This is when you know the holiday season is here. The stores are now filled up with ornaments of every color, sparkling reindeer, stars, silver and gold leaves, scented candles, socks and what not!

While people are busy shopping for the loved ones and decorating their house with Christmas tree and ornaments, we are here in the flower district making sure the city, hotels, building, stores and your home are all beautifully decorated with festivity. Our store, Mahir floral and event designs is now bustling with Christmas tree, red and white poinsettias, Magnolia wreaths, Christmas greens, paper white plants, branches and all the other holiday plants and flowers that you can possibly think of!

We all are familiar with the basic green, white and red color theme of Christmas – but sometimes it can be monotonous. Sometimes you need a little change, little out of the box ideas to make your holiday decoration eye catching and outstanding. So, this holiday season I have gone through several websites, blogs, articles to gather some new concepts and I have put together a few interesting and fun ideas for my readers.

So here goes some ideas that might set you apart from the traditional decor.

A wall of ornaments…

I think this is a pretty cool idea for a blank wall space. Now thinking about it we can actually also do an ornament curtain against window may be!

Not so traditional Christmas tree…

This Christmas tree impression with the wooden branches used as shelf I think is brilliant! You can possibly hand made those cute little hangings and give your home a warm cozy Christmas feel.

blue tree.jpg

A blue, white and silver tree is not something you see often but it has an undeniable harmony with the season and snow! I loved the theme and you can basically do any preferred color and make it as unique as your imagination.

book christmas tree.jpg

This probably isn’t exactly a festive look but this could be a heaven for book worms; a Christmas tree made out of their favorite books? It surely is different!

white-christmas-decor.jpg

How about a tree with branches and no greens? Well it doesn’t look as bad as it sounds!

This wood Christmas tree with white and silver ornaments can be a great fit for a contemporary space. It’s unusual but strangely captivating.

Enough of the Christmas trees! Let’s take a turn and see how can we make things different with our very popular wreaths.

Peacock wreath…

Blue feather wreath.jpg

I found the colors and texture of this particular wreath very fascinating. It has a soft touch to it unlike the usual green wreaths of rigid structure.

Paper Wreath…

The paper wreath can be a fun project for children and an exciting addition to your holiday decor. It might not be the easiest DIY project but you can always tweak things, make it easy, engaging and fun!

Intense Blue Wreath…

This vivid blue wreath caught my attention in pinterest. The color hue here is gorgeous and the spray painted pine cones looks amazing.

Now to make things more amusing I am going to put out some random ideas I collected from different places…

Let’s dress up the refrigerator …

Isn’t that absolute fun?

Picture it!

Using photos can be an entertaining way to direct your gifts instead of putting name tags.

Pine cones for the table !

The painted silver pine cones on the stand clearly can be a nice center piece for the table spreading seasonal holiday vibe. These indeed looks very polished and appalling with the touch of green peeking from the sides.

Inside of the door…

And last but not the least the door! We often stay on put after decorating the outside with Christmas lights and forget about inner side of the door. Let’s not neglect the indoor and light it up around the door frame to spread the festivity all the way.

A big part of holiday is decoration. There will be always new ideas, different ways of doing things, popular trends etc. but most importantly holiday is about getting together with family and friends, enjoy the fun part of decoration, food and celebrating the season…with that note Happy Holidays everyone!

Growing plants in water

DSC_2921

Growing plants in water can be a fun summer project. There is a long list of plants that can survive in just water and will grow beautifully. You can use almost any container that will hold water. Growing plants in water bottle is also common. Starting from Mason jars to glass water bottle, anything that will hold water can be your water plant pot!

So let’s not wait anymore. Here’s a quick guideline for your next DIY project for the summer!

First, here are some plants that could be appropriate for your water planting –

  • Begonias
  • Chinese Evergreen
  • Coleus
  • Croton
  • Philodendron
  • Impatiens
  • English Ivy
  • Pothos
  • Dracena
  • Herbs (mint, basil, oregano, lavender, rosemary)
  • Arrow head
  • Sweet potato vine
  • Wandering jew etc.

Hanging or creeping plants from cuttings are often the easiest to root in a water environment. After you have decided on your plant you can move on to vessel.

Clear or colored, as long as it’s translucent, anything either glass or plastic that can hold water is a potential vessel for houseplants. You can also find different shape and size of inexpensive bottles and vases at Dollar stores and craft stores but old-fashioned canning jars or even drinking glasses work great, too.

Right after you are satisfied with your selection of plant and vessel, now you are ready to root plants in water.

Rooting plants in water is not as different from rooting them in soil. Wash all the soil completely off the roots and cut any dead or decayed leaves and place it into the water or you can clip off a small, actively growing segment (right below the leaf) from an existing plant and place it into a water filled vessel. Once the cutting is placed into the water, roots will soon appear along the submerged stems.

Aftercare & Maintenance

Sunshine: A plant growing in water will usually require the same amount of light  as it would if it were growing in the soil. Some plants flourish best in a clear glass jar and would love lots of sunlight while on the other hand others seem happier in a ceramic vase with not so much love for the sunlight! So, feel free to move your cuttings around until you find the perfect combination that’s compatible.

Water: It is best to use bottled spring water or well water than tap water since most tap water is either chlorinated or the nutrients have been filtered out. Plan to change the water about once a month. If algae becomes a problem, change water more frequently. Meanwhile, you can keep adding a small amount of water as it evaporates from the vase.

Feeding: You can add just a few tiny grains of soluble plant food or a couple of drops of liquid fertilizer to the water after each change. Be careful while doing so since fertilizer added to water is immediately available to the plant’s roots unlike fertilizer added to soil so it’s very easy to overdo it and injure your plants.

Controlling growth: Simply cut back some of the roots or pot the plants in soil if excessive root growth starts causing problem.

Mother nature has mysterious ways to do things. All we can do is play along and have some fun of our own.So let’s start preparing for a beautiful, fun and enjoyable summer. I know I will! What about you?

Spring is coming !

There is no greater pleasure than saying goodbye to winter! As we bid farewell to the snow and the cold weather, with great pleasure we welcome the fresh air of spring and perfect balance of sun and warmth. The longer days with birds chirping and flowers blooming is the perfect transition to summer.

Blooming tulips are one of the specialty of Spring along side the newly grown leaves on trees that says Spring is here!

The new leaves coming out of every little (previously hibernating) branch and embracing the nature is indeed a cheerful sight. That is perhaps the nature’s way to say every dark tunnel has a light at the end. A new start, a new beginning, a new cycle.

Other than the beautiful trees bearing the  new leaves we also have Dandelions, Hyacinth, Cherry Blossoms, Quince, Daffodil etc. smiling to the nature’s weirdness.

Floral February

Valentine’s day and flowers can be interchangeable as we step into February and feel the abundance of love blooming all around us. Not that ‘love’ needs any season or reason to celebrate but the month of February has a sense of endearment that brings people close, encourages even the busiest person to take their mind out of the concrete walls and send flowers to their loved one. May it be for a friend, lover, parents, grandparents, co worker, special someone or a mere acquaintance, flower has never failed to express love in the best ways.

Let it be a single stem rose …

Our Edith James

Edith

It’s only once in a while that someone truly remarkable becomes a part of our lives.  We had the privilege and pleasure of having Edith James on the Mahir team.  She graced us with her sincere kindness, her unique humor and her striking beauty- inside and out.
With sadness, we say goodbye to a beautiful woman who touched and inspired so many of us in such a profound way.  We honor her life.  We cherish the memories.
We will miss her dearly.

“Happier New Year”

imgres

The New Year is a time of excitement, inspiration and hope…  That special day comes, in most cases, just in time for a well deserved and much needed change.  With finely noted plans, we’re ready to plunge into places where everything is just…better.  Our visions and dreams from previous years are ready to manifest- or so we hope.  The first few days are bliss.

It’s a new year and we can do it all, we can accomplish anything.  But, as time rolls on as quickly as she tends to do so, we snap into reality.  The party is over, the crowd is long gone and what remains are stepped over streamers.  We send wishes for a happy new year, but what does it truly take to be happy?  Accomplishing our goals right on target, right on time?  Gaining more notoriety and recognition?  Stuffing our pockets with more cash?

Happiness, like success, is a journey rather than a destination.  Each day we set out to conquer the world.  Usually, we don’t.  Nevertheless, we should find a source of contentment despite common setbacks and unwelcome surprises.  Many scholars have found plants to be a source of inspiration.  According to an article in Miller-McCune, several research studies related to the positive impact of nature on the human condition, producing psychological benefits, reduce stress and improve concentration.

Perhaps incorporating more nature into our lives will help us maintain the type of attitude and fortitude to obtain the results we wish for on the morning after the ball drops.  Get more plants, observe nature.  Go for more walks in or around parks.  Maybe this year will be different.  Maybe we will will refuse to settle for a Happy New Year and resolve to have a Happier New Year.
